NPL Season 2 Complete (Sport/Poker)

Last night was the last round of the second season for the NPL. I had a good night and finished 18th but it wasn't enough to pick up any extra points, so overall I ended up finishing 8th at PJ Gallaghers Drummoyne.

The top five from each venue get to play in the big tournament in a couple of weeks but because most of the top finishers at Drummoyne are also in the top five at several other venues, and also many of them are in the top positions overall, it means that a few extra players from each venue may get to play to fill the other places. So I'm hoping my 700 points for my single win and my 100 appearance points every other week are enough to get me through to the tournament. I should find out later this week.

There was one hand last night that I should have won and I might have lasted a bit longer if I had. I had pocket sixes and called the medium bet on my right. The player on my left also called so there were three of us in the hand. I flopped another six and there were no other big cards and no matching suits. I pushed hard because I was the chip leader at this stage. The player on my left folded but the player on my right called. The turn was another small card but now there were two hearts on the board. I bet again putting the other guy all in and he called the bet. I showed my trip sixes and he turned over a king and four of hearts. He had nothing except a flush draw. Sure enough the river card came and it was another heart! This guy had nothing after the flop while I was sitting pretty with three sixes. I was pushing and for some reason he kept calling up to the point of being all in. If it was my hand I would have folded after the flop but for some reason he kept playing and pulled off a miracle flush. It was a big pot that I wish I'd won.

I've started playing a regular game of poker up at the local P.J. Gallagher's pub as part of the National Poker League competition. I've played twice so far with mixed results. The first week I placed 32nd out of 38 but I followed that up the next week by finishing 1st out of 57. The National Poker League is well organised and there's a tournament at the end of the season for those that finish in the top 5 at each venue. Hopefully I can play enough games and pick up enough points to maybe take part. If not it's still great fun just playing each week.

Last night we went to see Coldplay play a sold out show at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. We had great front row seats and they put on an awesome show. Chris Martin was as fervent as ever jumping around like a madman. They are one of the best bands ever and I’m happy now that I’ve seen them play live.

I recently moved the site to ASP.NET 2.0. It was a pretty simple and quick migration. It's on a new server too which might explain why everything feels a bit quicker.

You might also have noticed the updated design which still needs to be polished up in a few places.

Took the opportunity to assess some of the projects on the site. I have decided to discontinue development of the Simbolic Simple Dashboard. I don't think too many people were actually using it. Microsoft's Windows Live site does everything I was trying to accomplish and is much better than anything I could come up.

Lookout for some .NET 2.0 versions of the Simbolic Software applications coming soon.

Under no circumstances may two men share an umbrella, unless at

It is ok for a man to cry under the following circumstances: a.
When a heroic dog dies to save its master. b. The moment Angelina
Jolie starts unbuttoning her blouse. c. After wrecking your boss' car.
d. One hour, 12 minutes, 37 seconds into "The Crying Game". e. When she is using her teeth.

Any man who brings a camera to a stag night may be legally killed

Moaning about the brand of free beer in a mate's fridge is forbidden.
However, complain at will if the temperature is unsuitable.

Never hesitate to reach for the last beer or the last slice of pizza, but not both that's just greedy.

If you compliment a bloke on his six-pack, you'd better be

Never join your girlfriend or wife in discussing a mate of
yours, except if she's withholding sex pending your response.

Phrases that may NOT be uttered to another man while lifting

I've had my O2 Xda II Mini for about 6 months now and couldn't live with out it. The size and performance is amazing for a device that does so much. I occasionally use it to take short videos and although the quality is pretty poor they are still fun to watch so I thought I would start uploading a few from time to time.

I quickly added the Windows Media Player control by borrowing some code from the MSDN Channel 9 site. It's not exactly cross browser yet but I'll hopefully fix that soon. Actually, the videos are originally MP4 so if somebody can suggest a way to embed the original files instead of having to convert them to WMV that would be great. Also, they aren't streamed so when you press play you might have to wait a few seconds for something to happen depending on your connection speed.

Simbolic RSS Alert is a simple application for monitoring RSS feeds. It is about as simple as RSS monitoring can get and will only alert you that a feed has changed but not tell you what has changed. The main purpose of the application is for users who don't need a complete RSS application but would like to know when a couple of feeds have changed like their friends photo collection.

Abbott and Costello Computer Store (Jokes/General)

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch, "Who's on first?" might have turned out something like this: COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking about buying a computer.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.
ABBOTT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.
ABBOTT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?
ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?
ABBOTT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.
ABBOTT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOTT: I just did.
COSTELLO: You just did what?
ABBOTT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!
ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?
ABBOTT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue "W".
COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "w" if you don't start with some straight answers. OK, forget that. Can I watch movies on the Internet?
ABBOTT: Yes, you want Real One.
COSTELLO: Maybe a real one, maybe a cartoon. What I watch is none of your business. Just tell me what I need!
ABBOTT: Real One.
COSTELLO: If it's a long movie, I also want to watch reels 2, 3 and 4. Can I watch them?
ABBOTT: Of course.
COSTELLO: Great! With what?
ABBOTT: Real One.
COSTELLO: OK, I'm at my computer and I want to watch a movie. What do I do?
ABBOTT: You click the blue "1".
COSTELLO: I click the blue one what?
ABBOTT: The blue "1".
COSTELLO: Is that different from the blue w?
ABBOTT: The blue "1" is Real One and the blue "W" is Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: But there are three words in "office for windows"!
ABBOTT: No, just one. But it's the most popular Word in the world.
COSTELLO: It is?
ABBOTT: Yes, but to be fair, there aren't many other Words left. It pretty much wiped out all the other Words out there.
COSTELLO: And that word is real one?
ABBOTT: Real One has nothing to do with Word. Real One isn't even part of Office.
COSTELLO: STOP! Don't start that again. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.
COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?
ABBOTT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

(A few days later)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?
ABBOTT: Click on "START".......

Cardinal Grapje (Jokes/General)

Hans Grapje was raised in a Catholic school in The Hague and, as a young man, aspired to become a priest, but was drafted into the Army during WWII and spent two years co-piloting B17s until his aircraft was shot down in 1943 and he lost his left arm. Captain Grapje spent the rest of the war as a chaplain, giving spiritual aid to soldiers, both allied and enemy. After the war, he became a priest, serving as a missionary in Africa, piloting his own plane (in spite of his handicap) to villages across the continent. In 1997, Father Grapje was serving in Zimbabwe when an explosion in silver mine caused a cave-in. Archbishop Grapje went down into the mine to administer last rights to those too severely injured to move. Another shaft collapsed, and he was buried for three days, suffering multiple injuries, including the loss of his right eye. The high silver content in the mine's air gave him purpura, a life-long condition characterized by purplish skin blotches. Although Cardinal Grapje devoted his life to the service of God as a scholar, mentor, and holy man, church leaders agree he will never ascend to the Papacy. No one wants a one-eyed, one-armed, flying purple Papal leader.
